About The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS)

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) was created by an act of parliament Cap 171 Laws of the Federation in the year 1963 August 1st.

The head of the department became known as the Director of immigration. This the first set of immigration officers were former NPF officers.

It became a department under the control and supervision of the federal ministry of internal affairs. As years went by the service underwent several transformations and restructuring to put it in a better position to adopt modern migration management.

Furthermore, in 1988, the Service was saddled with the responsibility for the issuance of all Nigerian travel documents which included the Nigeria Passports.

The service also embraced the use of ICT in its operations with the introduction of machine-readable passports (MRP) in June 1998.

In an attempt to improve on the MRP and in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, the NIS introduced the e-Passport on May 17th, 2007 under the leadership of the then

CGI CJ Udeh OFR, thereby putting the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the pages of history as the first country in Africa to introduce the e-passport and among the first countries in the world to do so.

The use of the e-passport has become a major tool in the fight against trans-border criminality as it contains the biometric details of holders thus making multiple acquisitions and identity theft difficult.

Notably was the establishment of the forensic laboratory which is for the purpose of scanning traveling documents and it is manned by highly skilled personnel in document fraud detection and techniques which have undergone training but locally and internationally.

To further strengthen the legal framework for the NIS, the National Assembly passed the Immigration Act into law on May 25th, 2015.

The Act thus repealed the obsolete 1963 Immigration Act and created an additional Directorate to be known as Migration Directorate for the Service.

All these are to ensure that there is efficiency in service and productivity.

From the inception of the NIS in 1963 till date, the Service has had three (3) Chief Federal Immigration Officers (CFIO), three (3) Directors of Immigration, Two (2) Acting Comptrollers General,

and Eight (8) substantive Controllers General with the current Comptroller General in the person of CGI Muhammad Babandede MFR.

He is taking giant steps and breaking ground with a view to upgrading and standardizing the operations of the Service while ensuring that prompt and efficient service delivery to its numerous publics is not compromised.

The controller general is trying and putting more effort to ensure the service is operating at the highest level.

• Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II
• Applicant must possess a minimum of first degree from a recognized institution of higher learning. NYSC discharged certificate
• Applicants must be between the ages of 18-30 years

• Senior Inspector of Immigration (SII) & Assistant Inspector of Immigration (AII)
• Applicants for Senior Inspector of Immigration (SII) must possess a minimum of a Higher National Diploma (HND) from a recognized institution.
• Applicants for Senior Inspector of Immigration (SII) must be between the ages of 18-30 years. NYSC certificate is compulsory for senior Inspector of Immigration (SII)
• Applicants for Assistant Inspector of Immigration (AII) must possess a minimum of NCE/OND from a recognized institution.
• Applicants for Assistant Inspector of Immigration(AII) must be between the ages of 18-26 years.

• Immigration Assistant III (IA)
• Applicant must be a holder of SSCE, NECO, GCE O/Level with a minimum of four(4) credits in not more than 2 sittings, which should include English and Maths.
• Applicants must be between the ages of 18-25 years.
