Before applying for a Canada Work Visa, it is vital to understand the process and how long it will take. It would be best if you also had an in-depth understanding of what documents and information are required by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for your application.
Once all these steps are completed successfully, IRCC will send you a letter confirming that they received your file from other immigration agencies or organizations such as Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

The following must be completed before you can get started with the application process of applying for the Canadian work visa:
Gather all the documents required. There are two types of documents that you need to gather:
- Acknowledgment letter or letter of recommendation from your employer if you apply for an International Experience Canada (IEC) program. The IEC program is a government-sponsored job offer to help people immigrate to Canada temporarily through a work visa or permanent residence card.
- Job offer letter (original). This will be sent directly from your employer’s HR department; it contains information on how much money is being offered in exchange for your services and what kind of work experience they require from you before hiring you permanently into their company’s workforce. Academic certificates and transcripts showing proof that these were obtained at least one year ago during the time period when applying for this type of visa application process.
A Documents Acknowledgment Letter is a document that confirms the authenticity of your documents and the information provided by you. It certifies that you have provided all the required information to support your application for permanent residence in Canada or another type of work visa.
The Documents Acknowledgment Letter will confirm that:
- You have submitted all required documents and information to support your application for permanent residence in Canada or another type of work visa;
- Your application has been accepted for processing;
- Your passport has been stamped with an “A” stamp, indicating its validity has expired.
The job offer letter must be original, not a copy, and the employer must sign it.
The employer’s name, address, phone number, and email address should be clearly stated in this document on company letterhead paper or faxed to Canada Immigration Health Services at 1-855-362-7477.
The following information is required:
- The full name of your employer;
- Your current address (if different from your mailing address);
- A clear explanation that you are hired for a specific position;
If you have intentions to apply from outside Canada, you will need to submit academic certificates and transcripts.
You must also submit academic certificates and transcripts if you apply from inside Canada. The following certificates can be used as proof of your degree:
- An official transcript in English or French showing that your undergraduate degree was earned at an accredited institution;
- An official letter of recommendation from a professor in the field of study relevant to your job or profession;
- An updated resume;
If you are applying at a port of entry (i.e., if there is no university/college or college within 100km), then all applicants must provide documentation on their educational qualifications with their application form before it can be processed further by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). This includes proof of graduation/diploma(s), transcripts showing completion dates, etc.
Proof of funds is required if you’re applying for a Work Permit. The following documents are acceptable:
- Bank statements from the last three months.
- Credit card statement from the last six months (if you don’t have one, ask your bank about setting up an online account).
Your resume is the document that you will use to apply for jobs, scholarships, etc. It includes all your educational background, work experience, and other relevant information about you.
A CV is a short form for curriculum vitae (Latin: “resume”), and it’s also known as a résumé in North America and New Zealand. A good CV should include the following:
- Education history – list each school attended by year (include details on awards received) and degree earned;
- Work experience – list all positions held in chronological order beginning with the most recent one listed first;
- References – list contact information for two professional references who can speak about your abilities and character traits;
It would help if you gave a photocopy of your passport and a clear, color copy of both the front and back pages.
Make sure that your name and date of birth are visible on each page, as well as any other relevant information that might be required by immigration officials such as your country name.
The document must also be valid for at least six months after you plan on leaving Canada because some countries don’t accept passports that have expired or been canceled in other countries.
To get a police clearance certificate, you need to submit your:
- Police clearance certificate application form. This can be obtained from your state or territory’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). The application fee is $85, and the processing time is 7-10 business days.
- Two recent passport photos (5cm x 7cm), which were from an accredited photo agency, take with white background and front light source in natural lighting conditions without accessories such as hats or glasses on, with a photo being taken within the last three months from the date of issue; these must not be smaller than 3 “x2”. The fee for this service is $20 per person plus any postage cost required as part of this process.
- In addition, if applying for multiple visas at once, then each person will need a separate PCC form signed by themself/spouse/partner, etc.
You must submit a medical clearance certificate from a licensed medical practitioner in your country of origin or residence.
You can use the online system for this purpose, but it is recommended that you contact an immigration lawyer for advice on how to obtain this document.
The following conditions apply:
- The certificate must be issued by a physician who has been trained in human medicine and issued within six months before the submission date of your work visa application;
- The validity period of such a certificate must not exceed six months from when it was issued;
- The doctor should have examined you concerning any infectious diseases affecting public health in the country/state where they live and vaccinations against them.
If you have a spouse or children, you will also need to provide them with their passport copies. If you are not married, then you don’t need to provide passport copies of your spouse or children.
If you are applying to Canada, the following requirements must be met:
- You must be 18 years or older.
- You must be healthy and have no health issues preventing you from working in Canada.
- You need to meet all the requirements for citizenship, including having a valid passport, speaking English or French, and earning at least $10,000 per year for each year spent in Canada as part of your work visa application process. This can include any job where you work full-time, such as bartending or waitressing (or other types). If you don’t still need to meet all these requirements but want more information on how they apply specifically to your situation before applying, then contact the official team today.
If you are applying from outside Canada, the following requirements must be met:
- You must be at least 18 years.
- You must have a valid passport and be eligible to enter Canada.
- Your application will only be processed if you do not fall into any of the conditions: prohibited from working in Canada (for example, if you have served prison time) or if there are outstanding immigration violations on your record that could pose security risks for Canadian citizens or permanent residents. If this applies to one or both of these situations, then an interview may occur before granting your visa application. However, these issues must be brought up during this meeting so that they can be resolved before proceeding with processing further steps, such as applying online through CIC’s website.
To be eligible, you must have the following:
- You must be a Canadian citizen. If you are not a legal Canadian citizen and want to apply for an extended stay, you will have to apply as a visitor.
- You must be at least 18 years when applying in person at the border or by mail. However, if you are under 16 years old and traveling with your parents or legal guardians who are also under 16 years old, then only one parent/guardian needs to provide proof of age (e.g., birth certificate).
- A letter from either parent explaining this fact is also acceptable as proof of their relationship with their child/children. However, it cannot be used as evidence that they could legally bring them across borders without supervision by someone else (this may include grandparents). The letter should include information such as how long they have been living together etc. Still, no specific details regarding where they live currently – just generalities like “we live here” would suffice unless something more precise can be provided, such as location within ‘this city’ rather than the city name itself may work fine, too, depending on context.
You may be required to apply for a work visa when you enter Canada at a Port of entry. If so:
- The type of application depends on how long your business will stay in Canada (e.g., 1-2 years).
- An employer needs to sponsor your application by filling out an online form asking them questions about your experience and information such as salary expectations, etcetera.
Processing time can be less if you apply from inside Canada. If you are eligible for a work visa, it may take up to 6 months before your application is processed. You will have an interview with the IRCC and must provide proof of employment or study authorizations.
Biometrics is collecting and analyzing unique physical characteristics for identification purposes. Biometrics are used to identify individuals by their unique physical features, such as fingerprints, voiceprints, retinal scans, face recognition software, and iris scans. Biometrics can also be used to verify identity at airports, border crossings, and other ports of entry.
Biometric information is collected from you when you apply for a temporary work visa or permanent residence in Canada through the TCEC Online Portal (TCP) online application system. The biometric collection process usually takes about 15 minutes but may vary depending on how busy your regional office is at that time.
You are authorized to work until your work permit application is decided, even if the 120-day validity period has expired. If you must have proof of authorization to continue working, you can request it using our web form.

Processing times for work permit applications and work permit extensions at the end of March 2022 exceeded the service standard of 60 days at 71 days for initial work permits and above the service standard of 120 days and 136 days for work permit extensions.
