What About Overtime Compensation?

Do you charge extra for extra time if a family calls to say they’ll be a couple of hours late?

In most cases, I would recommend asking for your regular rate for any extra hours rather than having a separate overtime rate.

Because babysitting is typically a part-time job, you are not entitled to overtime pay if you work more hours than expected.

The only exception is if you work as a full-time babysitter. In that case, you may be entitled to overtime pay in some places (usually half your normal rate.) Especially if the family considers you a household employee and deducts taxes from your pay.

Many parents will pay you a little extra as a tip if you stay late. But I don’t think it’s worth jeopardizing your relationship with the family for a few extra dollars.
