Don’t forget to take a stroll in the park, or just sit and listen to your favorite music with headphones, or paint a painting, or go on a date night, among other things. It is more critical than you realize. And by doing so, you gain a semblance of equilibrium.
Life is fleeting. So, don’t overlook those details when you strive for bigger targets. With that in mind, here are 15 important time management tips for getting the job done.
1. Set the priorities correctly.
There is a correct and incorrect way to set priorities. If you don’t set your objectives correctly, you’ll lack the necessary targets, forcing you to veer off course. But when you set them up correctly, the sky’s the limit.
To help you see it through, use the SMART target setting tool. And when you do set those targets, make sure you have compelling reasons for trying to meet them.
2. Find a reliable time control scheme.
Using the best system to do so is one of the time management tips. The quadrant time management scheme is most likely the most effective. It divides the tasks into four quadrants based on their significance and relevance.
Things are either urgent or significant or both at the same time. Neither (quadrant 4) are the activities you want to avoid, but it is the not-so-urgent-but-important while quadrant (2)are those that you can concentrate on.
3.For seven days, keep track of your time.
Spend the next seven days evaluating how you spend the time you already have right now. What exactly are you doing? Make a note of it in a diary or on your tablet. Divide this into 30 minute or hour increments. What did you accomplish? Is it a waste of time? Was it money well spent?
If you’re using the quadrant scheme, surround or log the quadrant where the operation occurred. Add in all of the percentages at the end of the seven days. Where did you spend the most of your time? Which quadrants are they? The findings could surprise you.
4. Spend the mornings working on MIT’s.
According to Mark Twain, “It’s better to eat a frog first thing in the morning if that’s your task. And if you have to eat two frogs, it’s better to start with the biggest one.” What was his point? Take on the most important things first thing in the morning.
There are the day’s most important things (MIT’1s). Completing these would provide you with the most energy to help you sail through the remainder of the day.
5. Apply the 80-20 law.
The 80-20 Rule, also known as the Pareto Principle, is another excellent time management tip. According to this maxim, 80 percent of the initiative yields 20 percent of the results. In revenue, this means that 80 percent of sales are produced by 20 percent of customers.
What’s the catch? Identify the 20% of projects that are delivering 80% of the results and scale them up. This is possible with careful tracking and study.
6. Incorporate keystone practices into your daily routine.
In his book The Power of Habit, Charles Duhig poignantly coined the term “keystone habit.” The keystone is the stone that keeps all other stones in place in architecture. Similarly, keystone habits not only encourage such healthy habits but, also serve to eradicate poor habits.
